5 Reasons Why Winning Will Either Make or Break You

Winning is often glorified in Hollywood movies and distilled into a 90-120 minute movie filled with trials and tribulations. Reality, however, is a totally different story.

Striving to achieve the goals you desire will definitely take you longer than the duration of a movie. It’s a lot more tiring, heart-breaking and unforgiving than any movie will ever be.

However, the price you pay to get what you want will pale in comparison to the rewards you get when you win. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.

It’s the reason winners shed sweat, tears and blood to make their dreams come true. The reward is worth the sacrifice.

To achieve success in both work and your personal life will require immense effort – but winners take on any and all challenges that come their way. It’s not easy to be a winner. Many try, most fail.

Let’s see why…

1. It will require everything from you

Winning will require you to make immense sacrifices. Want to have a 6-figure business?

It might mean sacrificing your social life, Netflix and may other interests of yours just to make this dream come true.

Want to have a set of six pack abs? – You’ll need to be at a caloric deficit for months and clean up your diet until you achieve a single digit bodyfat percentage.

NONE of these goals are easy. The going will get tough – but are you tough enough to make the sacrifices and keep going?

Most people just don’t have the hunger within them. But you will need to be hungry if you want to succeed.

2. You’re taking a bet on yourself

In the movies, almost always, the hero gets the girl he wants, or the job he wants or wins the game and everyone cheers. Success is almost guaranteed in a movie… and the audience goes home happy.

In real life, success is NOT guaranteed. At most, you’re taking a bet on yourself. You could start a business and do your best and still fail. There’s just no explanation for it and hindsight is 6/6.

But that doesn’t help your case when the naysayers come sniggering and hinting that they told you so.

Nevertheless, you must bet on yourself every single time and understand the lay of the land before you risk your time and effort. Pursue any goal with both eyes open.

Do your research well, and then begin. That said, don’t get paralysis by analysis. So many people never get past research stage because of fear.

Action expresses priorities. You must act. Only then can you win.

3. Failure is hard

Failure is a bitter pill to swallow… but swallow it you must, when you encounter it. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but a matter of ‘when’. You can bet your last dollar that you’ll encounter failure sooner or later.

How you handle it is of paramount importance. Winners know that failure is a part of success and not the opposite of it.

So treat your failures as learning opportunities and avoid making the same mistakes in future.

4. It is lonely

The road to winning is a lonely one. Very often, you’ll not even be able to confide in your closest friends or family. Your fears, disappointments, failures, etc. weigh on your heart and mind.

You may feel embarrassed to talk about it… or even talking about it depresses you. This is normal and to be expected.

One of the most important traits any winner needs to cultivate is to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Winning will take a toll on your mental and emotional health.

You’ll need to find ways to cope with the stresses of life and find some semblance of balance as you work your way towards achieving your goals. It may seem like all you have is yourself, and ideally, that should be enough for you.

5. You will change

The journey to winning will transform you as a person. You’ll develop new habits, beliefs, and even your temperament will change when pursuing your goals.

This is to be expected because you can’t achieve what you want by remaining where you are. You MUST change… and it’s for the best.

You’ll need a daily routine to make sure you have balance in life. In the past, you may not have had a routine, but now you do.

Your priorities will change. You may have enjoyed having beers 3 nights a week with friends at the bar. Now you barely see them as you work on your business.

Your friends will tell you that you have changed. You may feel that you’re the same. Both parties are right… you have changed, but that’s not a bad thing.

Your priorities have changed – because that’s what the goal demands of you. It has a price, and pay it you must.

If you don’t pay the price, you’ll never achieve your goals.

Finding the balance

The toughest part of it all will be finding some balance in your life. Your goals will be an obsession, but you’ll also need to ensure that you spend time with your family and do the needful so that the other areas in your life are not neglected.

We’ve all heard the stories of fathers who are so consumed with their businesses that they have no time for their children. Once again, this may be the cost of winning.

You do not want to achieve your goal and fail at everything else. So many people slide down this slippery slope of sacrificing to achieve their goal, only to discover that they have lost everything else.

Navigating these choppy waters of life as you sail towards success will require constant mental effort from you. There’s no easy way to do it. So be prepared and do what you can to find balance in your life and succeed in both your personal and career goals.
